Peter Schofield – “Ironman”
Just thought I should let you that I managed to complete my first ironman triathlon event in Austria at the weekend. It turned to be even more a challenge than expected as the temperature reached 40c as I about to start the run section and I was already suffering from heat exhaustion. I am not quite sure how I managed to keep going as I couldn’t walk in a straight line after 8 miles of the run let alone run or jog – I think if the medics had seen me at this point they would have stopped me there and then. Fortunately the temperature eventually cooled a bit I was able to mix in a bit of slow jogging in with the very slow walking.
To cut a long story short I eventually managed to finish in 16 and a half hours which is half an hour inside the cut-off time. Don’t be surprised if I insist on sharing the experience with you in more detail than you would care for on my return next week. I am now enjoying a relaxing week with the family in Austria and actually able to enjoy the hot weather (sorry, I realise that the weather in UK seems to have got even worse since I left a week ago).
I made a last minute decision to raise a few pounds from the event by supporting the Jane Tomlinson cancer appeal (see details on my Just Giving page) so if anyone would like to contribute just go to the Just Giving website www.justgiving.com and enter ‘Peter Schofield’ in the section where its says ‘Sponsor a Friend’ and then follow the instructions.
Thanks for your support and I look forward to catching up with you all on my return.
